How much does OpenTok cost?

The basic OpenTok API platform is free. We’ve introduced a beta version of our first paid service, but the basic platform is and will remain free.

What’s the catch?

There is no catch. OpenTok is an open, smart, and scalable video platform. It’s designed to become more cost-efficient as more people use it. Our success is rooted in the success of developers who build OpenTok apps. The more people use OpenTok, the better our platform becomes.

How do you guys make money?

We are going to charge for premium services, like our archiving service, which is currently in beta. Even archiving is free to use throughout our beta program. See below for what archiving will cost after it officially launches.

Isn't video streaming really expensive?

It can be, but we’re confident that we can keep reducing costs with technical innovation while building a profitable premium services business. We have more than three years of experience scaling to millions of users (even before we launched OpenTok) and understand our economics pretty well.

Does this mean 50 people can talk at once? 100? 1000?

Wow, we love ambitious developers! Learn more about our current capacity allowances. If you intend to engage particularly large crowds, please let us know and we're happy to help.

Does free mean we shouldn't expect good quality?

We are committed to delivering a great experience for you and your audience. And we’re working every day to make the free, basic platform even better! If you are not having a satisfactory experience with OpenTok, please share your feedback and post in our forums.

I haven’t paid anything to use the OpenTok API before. What’s different now?

If you are not using archiving, everything is exactly the same as before. The OpenTok API offers the same features, quality, reliability, flexibility, and power as before — for FREE.

So how much does archiving cost?

Archiving is free while it’s in beta. Rest assured, we will give you plenty of notice before the end of the beta period.

OK, but how much will archiving cost after it leaves beta?

Once the archiving service officially launches, packages will start at $30 per month. Any developer using archiving will need to pay for both storage and streaming of archives.

We plan to offer four monthly plans for streaming archives. Each streaming plan includes a prepaid number of viewable hours* per month. If you exceed your prepaid hours, you pay just pennies for each additional hour within that month.

* A viewable hour is defined as one viewer watching an archived stream for one hour. Whether an application has one user who views 100 different hours of content or 100 different users who view the same hour of content, that application has provided 100 viewable hours.

Is archiving your only premium service?

Archiving is currently our only publicly available premium service. However, we have more cool features — both for the basic platform and premium services — in the pipeline, which we look forward to sharing with you soon.
